Every June, the Wimbledon Championship comes to our attention as the stars of the game, such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Andy Murray, battle it out in SW19. However, it is not just the elite professionals who catch our eye on the court; once in a while, an unfancied player emerges from nowhere and upsets some of the favourites, earning a place in everyone’s hearts – after all, we all love an underdog!

One of the feel-good stories to come of this year’s championship was the remarkable run of the unknown 25 year-old Marcus Willis, from Warwick. The Englishman, ranked 776 in the world rankings, impressed fans and pundits alike with a dazzling run through 6 rounds of qualifying to reach the first round of the full tournament.

He might not even have got this chance, as he was only invited to compete after fellow player Scott Clayton dropped out. Despite this being a fine achievement for a player of his level, Marcus wasn’t finished; he eased his way into the second round, making it look easy as he dispatched Ricardas Berankis (ranked over 700 places above Willis) in straight sets before hitting the jackpot and drawing Tennis legend Roger Federer in a Centre Court showpiece.

Despite not being able to overcome the superstar, Marcus will no doubt be counting his lucky stars after his amazing tournament run netted him £50,000 - not bad for a man who had won just £230 from tennis prizes prior to this year’s contest! Speaking after his fairy-tale showdown with Federer, Willis told reporters how he felt dreaming big had helped him reach this remarkable achievement and capture the hearts of the nation:

“You've got to dream about it, and I have dreamt about it but I didn't think it was going to happen this year. I want to keep doing it and keep challenging”
